This product has been specially designed for the healthy development of the infant intestinal microbiota and immune system/function. It contains a combination of four strains – Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei together with Bifidobacterium lactis (formerly known as B. infantis) and Bifidobacterium bifidum at a dose of 2 billion organisms per gram of powder supplement.
This symbiotic combination of appropriate healthy bacteria is researched and formulated for the use of children between the ages of 1-14 years.

Lactobacillus acidophilus is one of the most widely used probiotic strains and is a natural inhabitant of the human gastrointestinal (GI) tract and reproductive mucosa. It is well adapted to colonise the GI tract and produces lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide and other antimicrobial substances, which helps reduce the colonisation of unfriendly pathogenic bacteria and yeasts in the GI tract. L. acidophilus has been shown to help promote/stimulate the immune system in the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract. Resident bacteria, particularly Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria, can exert antimicrobial activities influencing both local and systemic immunity.

Lactobacillus casei is a strain of lactic acid bacteria commonly used for fermentation processes and is a natural inhabitant in the mouth and human gastrointestinal tract. It has been shown, that L. casei can help to reduce the incidence and duration of diarrhoea in children and will provide a strong viable strain of lactobacillus in the GI tract.

Bifidobacterium lactis (infantis) is one of the most prominent of the beneficial bacteria found in large intestine of infants and has been shown to be effective in treatment of acute diarrhoea and help inhibit rotavirus infection in infants. It has been found to inhibit adhesion of gastrointestinal pathogens and helps to boost the immune system. B. lactis has been shown to increase phagocytic activity against E.coli species, as well as enhance natural killer (NK) cell activity. Recent reports have indicated that B. lactis supplemented in premature infants has resulted in increased in secretory IgA (the most important immune protective substance within the GI mucosa).

Bifidobacterium bifidum is the predominant bacteria found colonising the large intestine. As a producer of lactic acid and acetic acid it can help to reduce the colonisation of opportunistic pathogenic organisms and has been shown to have a role in immuno-regulation. Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli in the gut can offer resistance (by resistance or inhibition) to colonization by other potentially pathogenic microbes, thereby functioning as part of the gut defense barrier.

Inulin (prebiotic) – inulin acts as a prebiotic (promotes the proliferation of good bacteria) and when brought together with the probiotic species shown above, creates what is known as a ‘synbiotic’ formula.
Inulin has also been noted to increase short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) known to improve liver function and help the elimination of toxic compounds.

Dosage

1-4 yrs ¼ tsp (1g)
4-8 yrs ½ tsp (2g)
8-11 yrs ¾ tsp (3g)
11-14 yrs 1 tsp (4g)

Potential applications
Digestive support e.g. childhood diarrhoea, dyspepsia, dysbiosis. Immune / allergy conditions. Microbial infection. Eczema and atopic conditions may be benefit from improved gut flora balance. Adjunct to antibiotic use or for post-antibiotic use. Antibiotic associated diarrhoea. Conditions associated with premature birth such as necrotising enterocolitis (NEC).

Known contraindications
To date, there have been greater than 70 clinical studies involving more than 4000 children and infants (both term and preterm) consuming infant formula or foods containing probiotic ingredients, with no reports of adverse probiotic-related side effects.

Interactions
Acidophilus and B. bifidum are adversely affected by stress, alcohol and anti-biotics.
Adequate folic acid and riboflavin (vitamin B2) are required for acidophilus to produce its antimicrobial chemical hydrogen peroxide.

Useful links
There are limitations as to what might also be recommended for neonates and infants, most of which will be via a paediatrician. Essential fatty acids, organic food supplements, pure sugar-free vitamin and mineral formulas, and small amounts of essential fatty acid rich nutritional oils can be gradually introduced as necessary.
Note: It is interesting to note that 80 per cent of all immunologically active cells of the body are in the gut associated lymphoid tissue (GALT).
